“Light on the horizon”
When Jesus called His first disciples, they were fishing. Just doin' their thing, faithful and inglorious. I often wonder how hard it was for them to drop their nets and follow. Did some of them so love their trade that it was hard? Were they tired of the exhausting hauling and relieved to let it go? Or maybe the simple security of having an income was enough to make the response difficult? I don't know for sure. I do know though, that when Jesus calls us away from something, it's for something better.
It may not always be a “bad” thing He calls us away from, but something good could be dropped in exchange for something far better. He told them He would make them “fishers of men”, in exchange for fish finding. It's not that fishing became something they weren't allowed to do anymore, but the product would become something of more eternal value and far more fulfilling.
What are you fishing for?
Is it worth your time and effort? is it something you have been “called” to do faithfully or just a filler for your vain time? Honestly ask the Master and patiently wait for an answer. If we are chasing down things for earthly pleasure, we'll use it up, find our boat empty again and continue in a vicious cycle of fishing. Fishing for happiness rather than fulfillment.
There is nothing more rewarding that helping someone encounter Jesus. Introducing them to the One who changes everything, even when you think your life is great as it is...He'll open your eyes to reality. You'll see the lie you've been living and be revived by true life. The veil of darkness torn away.
There is light and life on the horizon for you.
Bravely respond to the call to leave it all behind and become a fisherman.
“And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Matthew 4:19
